Australians are moving their retirement savings out of traditional APRA-regulated funds at a striking rate. According to recent Australian Financial Review reporting based on Class and ATO data, roughly $47 billion has rolled out of industry, retail and public sector funds into self-managed super funds (SMSFs) over the past four years.
The total SMSF sector now holds more than $1.1 trillion across roughly 680,000 funds. In the June quarter alone, more than 12,000 new SMSFs were established.
What is driving this shift and what does it mean for your retirement strategy?
The Drivers Behind the Migration
Industry super funds bore the brunt of these outflows, with approximately $27 billion transferred from industry funds to SMSFs over the four-year period. Data shows 57% of rollovers into SMSFs originated from industry funds, compared to 39% from retail funds.
Industry analysis from Class and CoreData points to three clear reasons for this movement:
- Greater investment control – Members want direct ownership over their assets rather than pooled investment options.
- Flexibility in asset selection – Investors are looking beyond standard balanced options toward direct property, private equity, individual shares and tailored cash strategies.
- A desire for personalised advice – As balances grow and retirement approaches, generic fund strategies no longer address individual estate planning and tax needs.
A noticeable demographic shift is underway as well. While SMSFs have historically been viewed as vehicles for pre-retirees with large balances, Gen X and Millennials make up the majority of new fund establishments. Younger investors are engaging with their super earlier, driven by digital platforms and a clear intent to steer their own long-term wealth.
Is an SMSF the Right Path for You?
Taking control of your superannuation provides significant strategic freedom, but it is not a passive investment vehicle. As a trustee, you carry legal compliance obligations, reporting responsibilities and fiduciary duties under the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).
An SMSF generally becomes cost-effective and practical once your household balance supports the administrative overhead and when you have a clear strategy that standard super funds cannot deliver.
Before making a move, consider three essential questions:
Do you have a defined investment strategy?
An SMSF is only as effective as the underlying investment choices and risk management policies you put in place.
Can you manage the trustee obligations?
Compliance, annual auditing, ATO reporting and fund governance require time and continuous oversight.
Do you have the right advisory network?
Running an SMSF successfully requires specialist guidance from licensed financial advisers, SMSF-accredited accountants and estate planning lawyers.
